South Texas Lyric Opera brings memories of the movie Godfather through the coming production of “Cavalleria Rusticana”
South Texas Lyric Opera and the City of Edinburg, are bringing “Cavalleria Rusticana” back to the Rio Grande Valley. The curtains are set to go up Saturday, April 18, at 8:00PM and Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at the Edinburg City Auditorium.
The opera centers around two pairs of lovers crisscrossed by war in 1800’s Italy. Dashing young war hero Turiddu returns home to find his true love, Lola, married to another, who appears pompous and more financially prosperous. Turiddu seeks revenge in the arms of another woman, Santuzza, and uses his romance to lure his true love back into his arms. A forsaken Santuzza finds herself in the midst of despair and little room to change the course of destiny. The show culminates in a tragic death.
“A tale of love and betrayal, the one-act performance is sure to keep attendees on the edges of their seats,” said founder and artistic director Maestro Mazias de Oliveira. We know that anyone who loves romance, suspense and drama will enjoy the performance. And don’t forget that our most famous operas, such as this one, are the soundtracks of our lives and so attendees will recognize some very notable songs, which will add even more enjoyment to the performance.” STLO finish its 10th season bringing professional soloists from New York, North and south Texas to perform with the opera chorus and orchestra from the Rio Grande Valley.
Running time is approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes with no intermission. Sung in Italian with English Subtitles.
